Seneca Nation scales back casino expansion plan in Niagara Falls

The Seneca Nation has spent $530 million on its casino in Niagara Falls, New York, but expansion plans have been put on hold in recent years.

The tribe acquired 48 acres for the casino through a land claim settlement. But about half of the property remains undeveloped, except for the Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel that opened in December 2002.

“I wish I could tell you that we can just close our eyes and continue on the path that we have been pursuing,” President Robert Odawi Porter said earlier this year when he was sworn into office, The Buffalo News reported. “But we cannot.”

Niagara Falls depends heavily on revenues from the casino. The tribe has suspended its payments to the city in a dispute with the state over the Class III gaming compact.
